I received this book for free from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.
In principle, I probably should have picked up one of these volumes before. I knew that Tim Powers and Jerry Pournelle are both involved with the Writers of the Future contest, which probably should have given me some confidence that this would have stories I would like. However, I never acted on that knowledge, so when I received this review copy I was happy to see that my suspicions were correct: there are a lot of stories I like here. Even the so-so stories were fun to read.
For example, Spin Dizzy Down, which I didn't like at first because of its unusual train of consciousness narrative, grew on me once I caught on to the story the author was trying to tell. The onion layers were hidden deep in this one. And I appreciate the classic scifi reference of the title.
Since the publication of this series is managed by the estate of L. Ron Hubbard, we get to read some of Hubbard's work here too. I had never read any of his stuff, but The Devil's Rescue was a great sailor's yarn. I can see why Hubbard was a legend to other authors.
If you like classic scifi, you won't be sad to pick up this volume.
